Strict gun laws alone won't stop violence

A recently read article (“Urban advocates say new gun control talk overdue” by Jesse Washington, national writer for The Associated Press) referred to gun violence in Chicago.

He quoted Tammerlin Drummond, a columnist for the Oakland Tribune who wrote “about 7-year-old Heaven Sutton of Chicago, who was standing next to her mother selling candy when she was killed in the crossfire of a gang shootout. Also in Chicago, which has been plagued by a recent spike in gun violence: 6-year-old Aaliyah Shell was caught in a drive-by while standing on her front porch; and 13-year-old Tyquan Tyler was killed when a someone in a car shot into a group of youths outside a party.”

How could this possibly have happened in Chicago, which had among the most restrictive gun laws in the country for its citizens, even while the mayor had armed guards?

In addition, Connecticut, according to the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, ranked #5 on its safe state scorecard — even higher than Illinois.

If strict gun laws alone were the key to preventing gun violence the recent tragedy in Newtown, Conn., and others, such as those referenced above, should not have happened.

It is hoped that other factors brought up (access to mental health, reporting suspicious behavior, influencing factors) will continue to be discussed, allowing for possible solutions/remedies to save lives.

What people forget about is the fact that the Conneticut school was totally locked after a certain time and had to be in vision of a camera to gain entrance with somebody opening the door. If there would have been armed security at that school when this person that starting shooting out the windows to gain entrance he would never had made it to the classrooms. People just don't want to use common sense!

Do you have anymore excuses for owning guns?

Everyone can make all the excuses they want about their right to have guns; and if so-so schools would have teachers and guards with guns, etc.etc. The bottom line.........guns are made ONLY of killing. If the fools of this country didn't have access to guns, there wouldn't be all this senseless killing. Amazing! Even with the death of these children, and the men rant/rave about their right to have guns, even wanting to arm the school teachers. Are they insane?

How are you going to ask the bad guys to stick to that law? Also, do you really believe that they won't keep these AR-15's, while we turn in our extra rifle's and keep one single shot rifle and one pistol?
I am a law abiding person, but if that is going to be the case, I believe I will cross the law, and keep *"MY"* choice of guns!
Here is a scenario.... You watch two thugs with illegally owned AR-15's, kill multiple people, and then point them at one of your friends, or family member of yours' head, and I am there too, all this over the wallet in their pocket, or worse, maybe they like the looks of their daughter. Do you still want me to only have my single shot pistol/ "musket" or do you want me to defend these innocent people with my guns of choice? " Hmmmm, no thanks!
It is a little late to make rule to regulate these guns! They are out here in public! Millions of these styles of guns are in the public's hands! Do you really think that a thug who wants to keep his status in his peers' eyes is going to turn in his gun? While his rival carry's a semi automatic 15 clip pistol in his belt, and a AR-15 in his trunk?
If so, it is you who is not dealing with reality!

WOW!! I can't believe some peoples ignorance!!! Take the guns away from LAW ABIDING citizens, hmmm looks like being a criminal is going to be A LOT safer… What is so hard to understand that guns DO NOT kill people its people that do that and for your information you don’t need a gun to do it but you will need a gun to protect yourself from the criminal that will kill you with his gun that he has gotten because he is a law abiding citizen … People pull you heads out of your you know what’s !!!!

peggyjoy - instead of acting the part of upholding the messiah of the US of A why don't you check out the top five causes of deaths in America? Smoking happens to be #1 and yet the people of Washington vote to legalize pot. #2 is Medical errors. Now that really makes sense! If you get out of that tunnel vision and broaden your peripheral you might have a less stressed attitude. There is no excuses but a lot of areas to be addressed with priorties.

peggyjoy - let me enlighten and broaden your perspective on gun control! Chicago with the strictest gun control laws - the stats released today - 1.5 persons killed per day with 440 school age children shot and wounded over the year of 2012. Now if you would like gun control so bad move to Chicago?
