Irish girls reign over Christmas tourney

WALLA WALLA — Winners and still champions.

DeSales’ girls basketball team completed a 3-0 run in the annual D.A. Davidson Christmas Classic and earned its second straight Classic crown Saturday night with a 45-40 victory over Touchet in the Irish gym.

Also on Saturday, University Prep got the best of Weston-McEwen, 65-32, and Waitsburg-Prescott knocked off Valley Christian, 55-20.

On Friday, Touchet nipped University Prep, 37-36, DeSales overpowered Valley Christian, 66-14, and Weston-McEwen stopped Waitsburg-Prescott, 54-40.

DeSales 45, Touchet 40

Abby Crowley scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Irish (8-1) held on for their eighth straight win.

Ashlyn Lyons added 12 points and eight boards for DeSales.

“Hats off to them,” DeSales coach Tim Duncan said while saluting the stubborn Indians (7-3). “They did a lot of good things.”

The game came down to a couple of big plays, Duncan said. A Lyons’ 3 gave DeSales a 43-35 lead with two minutes and change remaining and a low-post bucket by Allison Wujek in the waning moments provided the Irish with their final margin of conquest.

Cierra Jo McKeown led Touchet with 17 points.

“I wish we could have pulled it out,” Touchet coach Missy McKeown said. “We had a lot of opportunities that we missed but, overall, we played a good game.”

University Prep 65, Weston-McEwen 32

The TigerScots (8-4) trailed 20-5 after one quarter and were never able to catch up.

They trailed 34-9 at halftime.

Molly von Borstel and Marlene Bodmer had seven points apiece for W-M.

“U Prep came to play ball,” W-M coach Amber Doremus said. “They pressed, kept after it, and made the most of their opportunities.”

Waitsburg-Prescott 55, Valley Christian 20

Stacia Deal scored 13 points as W-P built a 15-4 lead after one period and never looked back in Saturday’s 9 a.m. special.

Waitsburg-Prescott (3-7) led 32-12 at halftime and 46-16 through three periods.

“We got better over the weekend,” W-P coach Jerry Baker said. “I didn’t know how we’d play this morning. We were more aggressive taking the ball to the basket.”

Touchet 37, University Prep 36

The Indians survived despite shooting just 7-of-19 from the free-throw line.

University Prep sank only 4-of-15 freebies in the game.

Kristin Warner and Cierra Jo McKeown scored 12 points for the Indians. Warner claimed a game-high 11 rebounds.

“We didn’t come out ready to play,” coach McKeown said. “In the second half, we took care of the ball and blocked out. We switched to a zone defense and it seemed to work.”

DeSales 66, Valley Christian 14

A 21-0, second-quarter blitz spelled the beginning of the end for Valley Christian.

Brigit Lyons led the Irish with 18 points and was 4-of-5 from 3-point land.

“Brigit had a great game and looked really good,” Duncan said. “Our kids ran the floor well. That’s what our 4’s (forwards) can do. They are a key component. It was terrific.”

Weston-McEwen 54, Waitsburg-Prescott 40

Molly von Borstel notched a double-double — with 15 points and 13 rebounds — to lead the TigerScots over W-P.

W-M made 19-of-29 free throws in the game, a stark improvement over past games, according to Doremus.

“We’ve struggled at the free-throw line for a few weeks,” Doremus said. “We’re starting to do better. We had less turnovers (30) than (Thursday — when the TigerScots committed 50 against DeSales).”

Katy Hofer put up 12 points to earn top-scoring honors for W-P, which led 22-19 at halftime.

“The first half was one of the better halves we’ve played,” Baker said. “We played pretty (well) for three quarters. We couldn’t get by the press that didn’t cause us any problems in the first half. We’ve got to learn to take care of the ball.”
