Walla Walla - Arthur L. "Rusty" Russell, 93, passed away Jan. 25, 2012, at Park Manor Rehabilitation Center, 1710 Plaza Way, Walla Walla, where he was a resident since 2001.
Rusty was born Aug. 5, 1918, in Moose Lake, Minn., to Arthur Cyrus and Iva Mable Briggs Russell. He lived in the Kooskia, Idaho area and in Clarkston, Pomeroy, Anatone and Asotin, Washington. He worked for the US Forest Service, the railroad, in logging, farm work, and as a mechanic, as well as at the Salvation Army store.
Rusty married Elna Juanita Blood on Aug. 29, 1939, in Orofino, Idaho. He was a very friendly person who loved God. He enjoyed playing his harmonica and Bingo, listening to music, and attending church. He was also a volunteer at the VA Hospital. He was a member of the Walla Walla Alliance Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Elna; and his sister, Bertha. He is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Iva Lee Laughter of Milton-Freewater and Juanita and Dick Loid of Burbank; four grandsons, LaVern Hayter of La Grande, Ore., Michael Hayter of Austin, Texas, Rick Loid of West Richland, and Chris Loid of Vancouver; nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; and a very special person in his life, Fred Cole, who was like a son to him.
The memorial service will be 2 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 9, 2012, at the Walla Walla Alliance Church, 902 S. Howard Street, Walla Walla, Pastor Steve Morris will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Walla Walla Alliance Church through Mountain View-Colonial DeWitt, 1551 Dalles Military Road, Walla Walla, WA 99362.
Rusty's family wishes to express gratitude to Dr. Robert Carmody, Walla Walla Community Hospice, and all the staff at Park Manor Rehabilitation Center for their loving care. He had many friends there.
