WALLA WALLA -- Six local agencies will share $15,000 in tourism grant funds to help market upcoming events intended to boost visitor traffic to the community.
Tourism Walla Walla announced Tuesday the recipients of its annual matching fund program. They are:
Downtown Walla Walla Foundation: $5,000
Walla Walla Chamber Music Festival: $3,000
Walla Walla Valley Wine Alliance: $3,000
Walla Walla Guitar Festival: $2,000
Kirkman House Museum: $1,000
Walla Walla Kennel Club: $1,000
A record 11 nonprofit organizations requested funding. Tourism Walla Walla provides the funding as matches, so $30,000 will be dedicated to marketing efforts for local events. The goal, the agency said in the announcement, is to help nonprofits achieve their missions while also attracting more visitors to the Walla Walla Valley. Extra consideration is also given to events that take place during the typical off-season months of December through March. However, timing is not necessarily a deciding factor.
Tourism Walla Walla this year has increased its matching funds by $3,000. Various events that will be promoted through the allocations include Feast Walla Walla and Wheelin' Walla Walla Weekend, the Chamber Music Festival, the Kirkman House Sweet Home tour, the Kennel Club Show, Walla Walla Guitar Festival and a new promotion between the wine alliance and Alaska Airlines to boost air travel to wine country.
Tourism Walla Walla's Matching Funds Committee also decided to use printing funds to assist in the publication of the Farm Map and the Art Walk brochure. For more information, call 525-8799.
