KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. - The Sweets jumped out to a 5-0 lead, but Klamath Falls rallied to tie the game in the eighth inning and won the game in the bottom of the 13th on Josh Wong's bases-loaded single.
The 6-5 victory completed a series sweep for the Gems (14-19) over the Sweets (14-20), and was also the fourth-straight loss for the Sweets.
With the game tied in the 13th, Parker Miles led off with a single up the middle. A walk pushed him to second and a fielder's choice put runners on the corners. The Sweets walked Greg Velazquez to load the bases and Wong followed with a single up the middle to win the game.
The loss will be tough to swallow after the Sweets held a five-run lead in the sixth. Austin Byler got the Gems on the board in the sixth with a two-run homer to right field. The Gems eventually tacked on a third run in the inning to pull within two, 5-3.
They completed the comeback in the eighth inning. Wong started the rally with a one-out single, Conner George followed with a single and Josh Graham scored both with a double to left-center.
The game remained tied over the next four innings thanks to strong pitching from both sides.
Ben Ruff came on with a man on second and was outstanding over the next five innings. He got out of the jam with a strikeout, worked around a leadoff double in the ninth and struck out the side in the 10th. He left runners on first and second in the 11th with a strikeout and notched two more in the 12th.
In all, Ruff struck out 10 in five innings of relief.
The Sweets jumped on the board early, as Nick Vilter led off the second with his third home run of the year. It was the first run the Sweets had scored since the sixth inning on Thursday night.
Walla Walla added to their lead with a three-run fourth. Chance Kopacz scored Shane Zeile with a single to right and Jarrod Turner clubbed a two-out, two-run double to left-center to make it 4-0. The Sweets capped their scoring in the sixth as Alex Bonczyk doubled home Marc Garza with two outs.
The Sweets have today off before beginning a six-game homestand on Tuesday against Cowlitz.
