WALLA WALLA - The agency that helps others is finding itself in need of a little assistance.
The Blue Mountain Chapter of the American Red Cross is asking for volunteers to join its disaster preparedness teams.
With enough people on board to staff several teams, each group will get two to three months off after a 30-day period of being on call, noted Jerry Cummins, executive director of the Walla Walla office.
Volunteers respond to local emergencies such as house fires and flooding, and they can train to be deployed to national disasters, he said. "Like the fires in Montana. Last year we had 11 opportunities for deployment nationally."
Training takes place over two weeks and is done locally, he added. No previous experience is required.
Volunteers must be at least 18 years old, have a valid drivers license and be able to pass a criminal background check.
