Whitman baseball drops pair to Pacific Lutheran

Whitman lost the first game when the Lutes scored 11 runs in the fifth on only two hits.

TACOMA - Pacific Lutheran moved into sole possession of first place in the Northwest Conference baseball standings with a pair of victories over Whitman College Sunday afternoon.

After using an 11-run fifth inning to walk away from the Missionaries by a 17-2 margin in the opener, the Lutes added a 10-1 victory in the nightcap.

Pacific Lutheran improved to 5-1 in the NWC and 10-5 on the season. Whitman fell to 2-4 in conference and 2-16 overall.

Both teams managed just six hits each in Sunday's first game, but four Missionary pitchers combined to walk 11 Pacific Lutheran batters and hit seven more.

Whitman's downfall came in the fifth when the Lutes scored 11 two-out runs on two hits - plus seven walks and three hit batters. One of the two hits was Jacob Hoffman's grand slam home run.

With the Lutes ahead 1-0 after the first two innings, Whitman threatened to take the lead in the top of the third. Jimmy Chow singled with one out and moved to third on a double by Peter Valentine, but two fly-ball outs kept the Missionaries scoreless.

Whitman pushed across its two runs in the top of the eighth when Chris Andrews and Chow singled, advanced a base on a ground-out and scored on a single by Cameron Young.

Chow was two for three at the plate and drew a base on balls.

In game two, Whitman forged a 1-1 tie with a run in the top of the third. MacLean Harned led off with a single, moved to second base on an Andrews sacrifice bunt and scored on Chow's single to right-center field.

But the Lutes regained control with five runs on four hits and three Whitman errors in the bottom of the fourth. They tacked on their final four runs in the eighth.

Harned had two hits and a walk in four at-bats. Chow also had two hits, marking his fourth consecutive two-hit game. Valentine rapped a one-out doubled in the first inning but was left stranded.

Whitman is home next weekend to host a three-game series against Linfield. The first two games are set for Saturday, starting at noon, with the series finale at Borleske Stadium set for noon Sunday.
