Pioneers whip Estacada in twin bill

The Pioneers draw with Madras Friday afternoon before crushing Estacada, 17-8 and 8-3 Saturday.

MILTON-FREEWATER - What started with a 6-6 draw for the Pioneers on Friday afternoon in Madras, continued at McRae-Ireland Field Saturday against Estacada in non-conference baseball.

Mac-Hi turned in a solid defensive effort in Friday's draw and played well defensively Saturday, but added a pinch of offense to sweep Estacada 17-8, and 8-3.

"It started versus Madras where we played exceptionally well defensively," Pioneer coach Mike Garcia said. "We were looking for our defense to come together after Wednesday (a season-opening loss to Umatilla). We utilized the things we were doing in practice and it showed Friday.

"We played well today defensively," Garcia continued. "We hit the ball well. We put the ball in play and put pressure on them (Estacada)."

Troy Kessler got the Pioneers even in the opener with a solo home run to tie the game at 1-1.

The Pioneers pushed across four runs in the third to take command for good.

Kessler, Taylor Hodgin, and Jake Morris led a 17-hit Mac-Hi attack with three hits each. Dylan Shuler, Patrick Sheets, Kevin Cuellar each chipped in two hits.

Estacada scored first in the nightcap, but the Pioneers answered with a three spot in the home first. After Estacade tied it at 3-3 in the visitor third, the Pioneers pushed across a solo run in the home third to take the lead for good.

Mac-Hi collected 15 hits in posting the 8-3 win and completing the sweep.

Willie McCoy led the Pioneer hit attack with four hits.

Mac-Hi improves to 2-1-1 on the season.

Mac-Hi 6, Madras 6

The Pioneers, behind a McCoy two-run double, and a Morris RBI scored four first-inning runs here at Madras Friday.

Madras pecked away and used a three-run seventh to get it tied at 6-6. Neither team scored in the eighth and the game was called due to darkness.

Mac-Hi gave up 12 hits but got defensive plays when it needed them to limit the damage and come away with a 6-6 tie.

"We started hot," Garcia said of the first inning. "They had runners on base but our defense shut them down when we needed to."

Morris' two hits led the Pioneers.

Mac-Hi travels to DeSales Tuesday for a single non-league game at 4 p.m.
