PENDLETON - Walla Walla University's Wolves did a good job of beating themselves here Sunday afternoon in the first game of a softball doubleheader against Blue Mountain.
The Timberwolves did the honors in the second game.
The Wolves were guilty of six errors in the opener, four of them coming in the first two innings when Blue Mountain scored six times en route to a 7-2 victory. The Timberwolves bombed away for four home runs in the second game and routed Walla Walla 11-2.
"We didn't give ourselves a chance to win that first game," Walla Walla coach Mike Garcia said. "It was an up-and-down game and would have been a lot closer had we not made all of those errors.
"In the second game their bats flat-out came alive. Top to bottom, I would have to say Blue Mountain is one of the better teams we have faced."
The two defeats dropped the Wolves' record to 3-6 going into a home doubleheader next Sunday against a club team from the University of Idaho. The first game is slated for a noon start.
Aubri Iwasa socked a solo home run in the third inning and also contributed a single for WWU in the first game. The Wolves scored their other run in the first inning when Kristi Hernandez singled, stole second base and scored on a throwing error.
Kristy Alred's solo home run sparked a four-run Blue Mountain rally in the first inning of the second game. Cheyenne Friend socked a two-run homer in the second inning and a solo shot in the third, and Piper Carstens also hit a solo homer in the third.
"Nicole (Beeks) did a pretty good job of keeping the ball down, changing speeds and hitting her spots," Garcia said of his first-game pitcher, who also started the second game but was relieved by Hernandez in the second inning.
"She kept them somewhat off balance in the first game, but they had her figured out in the second game," Garcia added. "When they start hitting like that, there's nothing you can do."
Friend and Jordan Bennett each had three hits for Blue Mountain in the second game. Hernandez collected two of Walla Walla's four its in the game.
