Whitman's early lead doesn't stand against George Fox

The Missionaries take an early 3-1 lead, but the Bruins rally to win the Northwest Conference baseball game, 12-5, on Sunday.

PORTLAND - An early 3-1 lead failed to hold as Whitman College dropped a 12-5 Northwest Conference baseball decision to George Fox Sunday afternoon, a game played in Portland.

George Fox, which erased Whitman's initial edge with a five-run second inning, improved to 8-4 in the NWC. The Missionaries ended the weekend at 2-10 in conference and 2-22 overall.

Whitman's offense got right to work in the top of the first. Jonny Chow, after leading off the game by drawing a base on balls, stole second base and scored when Cam Young drilled a double to deep into the right-center gap. Aaron Cohen followed with a second run-scoring double to make it 2-0.

George Fox got a run back in the bottom of the first, thanks to an infield error and Danny Clifford's RBI-triple.

Whitman lengthened its lead to 3-1 with a run in the top of the second. MacLean Harned walked and later scored on consecutive singles by Chris Andrews and Chow.

The Bruins took charge for good in the bottom of the second with five runs on three hits and one error. A hit-batsman and base on balls early in the inning contributed to the outburst, which Jared Chase punctuated with a three-run double.

George Fox extended its lead to 9-3 before Whitman scored twice in the top of the eighth. Young singled and scored when Kyle Moyes doubled to left-center field. After moving to third on a single by sophomore Jimmy Madden, Moyes scored when Chris Konolige lifted a sacrifice fly to left.

Young and Cohen had two hits apiece as part of Whitman's 10-hit attack. Young scored twice and knocked in a third run. Both Chow and Moyes had one RBI apiece while also scoring one run each.

Chase had three hits and three RBI for the Bruins, who collected 12 hits and eight free passes (including two hit batters).

Bobby Orozco tossed five innings of three-hit ball, striking out four, to get the pitching victory for George Fox.

This weekend's three-game series was played in Portland because recent rain had rendered the outfield unplayable at the George Fox field in Newberg, Ore.

Whitman returns home next weekend to host Lewis & Clark for a three-game series at Borleske Stadium. The start time is noon for both Saturday's doubleheader and Sunday's single game.
