TigerScots power past Riverside's Pirates

Weston-McEwen's baseball team takes a 23-12 victory over the hosts in the finale of the tournament.

BOARDMAN, Ore. - Elliot Salter's triple and two doubles in a 4-for-5 performance at the plate led a Weston-McEwen offensive showcase Tuesday, as the TigerScots put a 23-12 hurt on the Riverside Pirates in the final game of the Riverside Tournament.

W-M coach T.J. Haguewood said the fireworks were largely thanks to pitchers running on fumes after both teams played doubleheaders Monday in the opening round of the tournament.

"I thought we ran the bases well, we put pressure on the defenses," Haguewood said. "It was a good last game before spring break. We've got a big break to improve in some aspects."

Calvin Thacker started for the TigerScots and pitched five innings before being relieved by Lance Thacker for the sixth.

"He (Calvin Thacker) was running on fumes himself," Haguewood said. "He battled up there, so it was good to see."

The TigerScots did most of their damage in the top of the third, scoring nine runs to build a 10-0 lead and seemingly put the game on ice.

But Riverside answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to avoid a mercy-rule ending and scored another nine runs over the next two innings as Calvin Thacker began to struggle.

The Pirates couldn't hold off Weston-McEwen however, as the TigerScots poured on nine more runs through the sixth inning and capped the game with a four-run seventh.

Nine TigerScot batters found the hit column in the victory for a total of 17 hits. They were helped by nine Pirate erros.

The TigerScots have spring break next week and follow that with a twin bill against Horizon Christian in Hood River, Ore., April 7, at 4 p.m.
