Wa-Hi defeats Camas in Seattle

SEATTLE - After clinching the Columbia Basin Big Nine 4A co-championship with a sweep of Wenatchee 20-3 and 11-0 on Friday, Wa-Hi traveled to the University of Washington stadium Saturday to play Camas in the Washington Fastpitch Festival.

The Blue Devils scored six runs in the first and then Harley Hubbard, in the circle for the Papermakers, blanked Wa-Hi the rest of the way.

"She (Hubbard) is the quickest and best we've faced," Wa-Hi coach Jerry Humphreys said. "We (after the first) hit some balls hard but right at them. Thank heaven we got a bunch in the first. Runs were tough to come by after that."

Libbie Jimenez had two hits and drove in one in the six-run Wa-Hi first. Andrea Hamada added a run-scoring double, Ellie Rassbach tripled, and Janelle Hartford singled as the Blue Devils jumped to a 6-0 lead.

Camas put up a three spot in the fifth, but Alyson Ambler, who started and went the first three innings in the circle, returned to the Blue Devil circle, and nailed down the win with a scoreless seventh.

"It was good for us to see fast pitching," Humphreys said. "It was a great test."

The Blue Devils claimed a share of the CBBN 4A title with Richland, both finished at 11-1 in league, with the sweep of Wenatchee Friday.

Welcome to the TraeAnn Payne show. Payne hit a grand slam home run in both games and finished the day with 10 RBIs.

Payne went yard with the bases full in a nine-run Blue Devil sixth in the opener to cap the 20-3 win.

Payne came back with another grand slam in the five-run Wa-Hi fourth of the night cap.

Ambler also went yard in each game and finished the day with five hits.

"TraeAnn (Payne) had quite a day," Humphreys said. "They scored first in the first game, but we started hitting the ball after that. We pitched well and swung the bat well."

Wa-Hi improves to 18-1 and closes the regular season with a Tuesday home battle with defending 1A state champion Connell at 5 p.m. at Murr Complex.

The Blue Devils start district play Saturday in Pasco against the winner of Thursday's Ike, Wenatchee game.
