WALLA WALLA — The Interfaith Coalition on Poverty of Walla Walla is marking the second week in November with candlelit walks at Land Title Plaza at First Avenue and Main Street on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 6-6:30 p.m.

The event marks National Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week, with focus on difficulties homeless people face, such as nights without shelter and days without food, no access to health care, isolation ad no support community, organizers said in a prepared statement. The vigil is a way for the community to show solidarity with those who do not have enough to eat or are without shelter.

“My hope is that through gathering together as a community in recognition of National Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week we can become more aware that many people face these challenges right here in Walla Walla,” said Tim Meliah with Catholic Charities.

“We may not be confronted with these issues on a daily basis but many of our neighbors are. I have witnessed the difference one person can make with a helping hand, a supportive shoulder or a listening ear.”

Donations will be accepted at the nightly walks for Walla Walla agencies that help with housing issues.
