BURBANK — The Ice Harbor Dam navigation lock will be closed to all recreational traffic starting Monday for channel maintenance work. The lock will reopen Friday evening.
Commercial navigation traffic will be allowed only during evening hours. The lock will be closed to commercial traffic beginning at 5:45 a.m. and ending at 5:30 p.m.
During the closure, a contractor will remove the rocks and earthen materials during daylight hours to bring the channel to the required operating depth. The Corps awarded a $254,680.89 contract on Oct. 31 to LKE Corp. of Washougal, Wash., to perform the work.
Recreational boaters can still access the river daily downstream and upstream of Ice Harbor from nearby boat launches.
Firewood cutting season extended in national forest
PENDLETON — Firewood cutting season on the Umatilla National Forest will be extended an additional two weeks, forest officials said Friday.
The season would have ended Thursday, but was suspended this year for several weeks due to extreme fire danger this summer.
Firewood permits can be purchased at any Umatilla National forest office or at several local businesses in the community. Permits cost $5 per cord with a minimum purchase of four cords for $20. A maximum purchase of 12 cords per household is allowed from National Forest lands during the calendar year.
People are asked to take additional precautions when road and soil conditions become soggy and saturated. Those traveling into mountain areas are asked to take extreme care to avoid getting stuck or damaging the land or vegetation.
The 2013 firewood season will begin in May. Information is available at 541-278-3716.
