Suspect sought in Dayton rape attempt

DAYTON — The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public to be on the lookout for a man believed to have attempted to rape a Dayton woman Sunday night in her backyard.

According to news release issued this morning by Dian McClurg, public information officer for the Sheriff’s Office, the suspect hid in the victim’s back yard in the south side of Dayton, then assaulted her from behind, hitting her in the head. The unknown man then attempted to remove the woman’s pants, according to police.

“The victim was able to get free by kneeing her attacker in the groin, and running back into the house,” McClurg stated in the news release.

The suspect is reportedly a slightly built man between 5 feet 6 inches and 5 feet 8 inches tall, with dark hair and a mustache. He was wearing a dark sweatshirt, a hood and jeans at the time of the attempted rape. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office at 509-382-2518.
