WALLA WALLA — Whitman drained 15 3-point baskets Sunday afternoon at Sherwood Center, six more than visiting Mary Hardin Baylor, and that was enough of a cushion to boost the Missionaries to a 94-84 men’s college basketball victory.

Ignas Pavilonis and Matt Mounier were the primary driver’s of Whitman’s long-range attack. Pavilonis sank 6-of-11 3-pointers and led Whitman in scoring with 23 points. Mounier was 5-for-7 from downtown and tallied 17 points.

Ben Eisenhardt and Josh Duckworth were also in double figures for Whitman with 16 and 10 points, respectively.

James Allen paced Mary Hardin Baylor with 16 points. Also in double figures for the Crusaders were Cory Meals with 14 points and Thomas Orr and Antonie Chaney with 10 points each.

Whitman, which moved to 3-2 on the season, was outrebounded 58-44, but the Missionaries’ defense forced Mary Hardin Baylor into 27 turnovers while the Whits gave the ball back just 15 times. The Crusaders’ Kitrick Bell was the game’s leading rebounder with 15 while Pavilonis and Eisenhardt snagged seven boards each for Whitman.

Whitman was in town Sunday after a three-game road trip to California in which the Missionaries won twice, including Wednesday’s 114-68 romp at Bethesda University in Anaheim.

In Wednesday’s victory, freshman Dominic Lippi was a perfect 5-for-5 from 3-point distance to lead the way offensively. Whitman shot a blistering 51 percent from 3-point land in that game.

Lippi also made his only 2-point field goal attempt of the night and was 2-for-2 from the free-throw line for 19 points overall.

Mounier also made 5 3-pointers and led Whitman in scoring with 22 points.

The Missionaries forced Bethesda into 27 turnovers and outrebounded the Southern California school 49-30. Eisenhardt led Whitman rebounders with eight.

Duckworth handed out eight assists for the Missionaries.

A scoring summary for Wednesday’s game was not available.

Whitman is at home again Thursday when the University of California Santa Cruz invades Sherwood Center.
