WAITSBURG — A 64-year-old man was arrested for allegedly assaulting the Irving’s Leather store owner after an altercation over of a pair of chaps.
According to a Walla Walla County Sheriff’s Office report, William Irving Jr., 60, reported a man, later identified as Steven Merriott, 64, came into his shop and demanded Irving repair a pair of leather chaps.
Irving reported that he told Merriott he did not make the chaps, and wasn’t responsible for poor workmanship. According the police report, Irving told police an argument ensued, and Merriott allegedly punched and kicked Irving. Both men ended up on the floor, Irving told deputies.
Deputies caught up to Merriott on U.S. Highway 12, and questioned him about the reported assault. Merriott reported he had been in a fight with “a rude guy” at the leather store.
Merriott was arrested on investigation of fourth-degree assault. Irving positively identified Merriott as his alleged assailant.
