WASHTUCNA, Wash. — Touchet scored twice in the final 40 seconds of the first half here Friday night to take a 32-24 halftime advantage over Lacrosse-Washtucna in a Southeast 1B-8 League football game.
The Indians then played lock-down defense in the second half while their offense continued to percolate for a rousing 70-24 victory over the Tigercats.
“They were chewing us up with a lot of short passes,” Indians coach Gary Dorman said of the Tigercats’ first-half offensive success. “We had some broken assignments that we took care of in the second half. We came out and shut them down pretty big in the second half.”
The home team had six offensive possessions during the final two quarters and managed just 29 yards of total offense and two first downs. Twice the Tigercats were thwarted by pass interceptions, and they were four-and-out on three occasions.
“They are a pretty physical team,” Dorman said of L-W. “We saw on film that they like to come at you, but we had a good game plan.
“Assistant coach Guy Gregg works hard with the offense, and they started clicking. And we have some good defensive kids who love to tackle and love to hit, and they did a good job of that.”
Junior quarterback Elias Martinez ran for a pair of first-quarter touchdowns from 19 and 5 yards, and he also scored a pair of two-point conversions for a 16-8 lead heading into the second period. But Joey Guske’s 1-yard touchdown run and a 20-yard TD scamper by Alec Fleming, each followed by a successful two-point conversion, had the Tigercats on top 24-16 as the second quarter wound down.
With 40 seconds on the clock, Elias Martinez finished off a Touchet drive with a 20-yard touchdown strike to Cory Ochoa. Shortly after the ensuing kickoff, L-W lost a fumble and Touchet was back in business at the Tigercats’ 35-yard line.
“We did a good job of clock management at that point, stepping out of bounds,” Dorman said.
On the Indians’ third play from scrimmage following the fumble recovery, with the clock ticking down to :00, senior Vicente Flores scored on a 15-yard run. Elias Martinez passed to Octavio Preciado for the two-pointer and the Indians went to the locker room with a 32-24 lead.
The second half belonged to the Indians.
Flores opened the scoring with an 82-yard pass interception return for a TD. Preciado scored on an 18-yard pass from Elias Martinez and on an 18-yard run. Colter McKeown contributed a 24-yard score and Riley Shanks finished off the rout with a 19-yard run for a touchdown.
Jose Martinez didn’t find the end zone, but he led Indians rushers with 106 yards on 15 carries. Elias Martinez added 82 yards rushing and Preciado gained 69 as Touchet piled up 322 yards on the ground.
Elias Martinez completed 5-of-10 passes for 93 yards and two scores.
Jonathen Holdren, who scored L-W’s first touchdown on a 24-yard run, led the Tigercats with 70 yards rushing on nine carries. Guske completed 11-of-18 passes for 147 yards, and Sam harder and Graham DeBell combined for nine receptions and 124 yards.
The Indians, now 5-1 overall and 4-1 in league play, entertain Garfield-Palouse on Friday. The Vikings have also lost just once in SEB-8 play.
L-W, which is also 4-1 in the league travels to St. John-Endicott to face the winless Eagles.
