Blue Devils fall to league-leading Kamiakin, 1-0

KENNEWICK — Kamiakin defeate Wa-Hi 1-0 Saturday afternoon in Mid-Columbia Conference girls soccer.

Rachel Young scored the goal unassisted in the sixth minute to put Kamiakin on top.

Kamiakin outshot the Blue Devils 7-3, with Wa-Hi keeper Alyssa James making seven saves in the loss.

“She kept us in the game,” Wa-Hi coach Jesse Cruz said of James. “Those saves that she made, those were real saves. She’s been playing well. The other coach even praised our goalkeeper, saying she’s pretty good.”

The Blue Devils (2-10) are still struggling with injuries, Cruz said.

“The girls played really well,” Cruz said. “We’ve played so well and we haven’t been able to score. We’re still aching from key injuries we had with Maggie Callan and Allie Greene.”

Kamiakin (9-1) is first in the MCC standings.

“When you have fairly good ball control and a lot of speed, that is dangerous,” Cruz said of the Braves. “We were prepared. We put (forward) Brigit Lyons in the back at center back to help with her speed and we kind of neutralized them a little bit.”

The Blue Devils host Richland Tuesday at 4 p.m.
