W-P's Deal wins Wildhorse; Lonai places 7th for Mac-Hi

PENDLETON — Waitsburg-Prescott’s Seth Deal ran to victory here Friday at the Kyle Burnside Wildhorse Cross Country Meet.

Deal, one of 180 harriers to answer the starting gun, covered the 5,000-meter Wildhorse course in 16 minutes and 25.19 seconds to edge out Enterprise’s David Ribich who finished second in 16:29.06.

“Seth ran a smart, strong race under rainy, windy conditions,” W-P coach Joanna Lanning said. “He looked terrific. I believe he will do very well at the district meet.”

One of Deal’s district adversaries, Tri-Cities Prep’s Skyler Larson, finished third in 16:31.65 to lead the Jaguars to the team title. TCP scored 51 points to win. W-P finished eighth with 224, and Mac-Hi finished 10th with 256.

“The rest of the team showed improvement,” Lanning added of the W-P contingent. “We were missing two of the team and I’m hopeful all seven will be able to run at Districts.”

On the girls side, Mac-Hi sophomore, Josie Lonai, led the Pioneers to a sixth-place team finish. Lonai turned a 19:43.15 over the 5,000 meters to finish seventh. Maggie Coleman of Hermiston led the 128 runners to the tape to win in 18:44.47 and lead the Bulldogs to the girls team title.

“Josie ran a fantastic race,” Mac-Hi coach John Milleson said. “Josie ran a solid race from start to finish. With Susie (Romero-diaz) finishing 19th, that gave us two in the top 20 and 6th overall, which is outstanding for us.”

For the W-P boys, freshman Tewedros McDowell was next to hit the tape for W-P, as McDowell finished 31st in 18:06.67. E.J. Meserve (18:43.5), Jacob Dingfield (19:27.68), and Kevin Kamel (21:10.3) rounded out the W-P contingent.

Jesus Saldana was the first Mac-Hi boy to break the tape. Saldana ran a 17:42.35 to finish 21st. Austin Cousineau (18:43.5), Cody Harmon (19:26.35), Raudel Garcia (19:55.37), and Chandler Simpson (20:05.39) wrapped up the scoring for Mac-Hi.

“It was Jesus’ first time ever to break 18,” Milleson said. “He ran real well on a tough course that was wet and slick in places.”

Sophomore Romero-diaz ran a 21:15.92 to her top 20 finish. Kristi Childers (22:49.66), Jackie Martinez (27:07.22), and Maria Saldona (27:28.91) completed Mac-Hi’s run to sixth place.
