Warriors clinch playoff berth with win over Big Bend

WALLA WALLA — Walla Walla Community College upped its winning streak to three, clinched a playoff berth and took sole possession of second place in the NWAACC East Region with a three-set victory over Big Bend Wednesday night at the Dietrich Dome.

The Warriors (23-6, 9-2 East) also helped raise almost $500 with a breast cancer awareness fundraiser.

“It was really nice to honor those that have fought so hard and are currently fighting breast cancer,” WWCC coach Tim Toon said “All of our players and staff have been directly affected.”

The Warriors won by scores of 25-15, 25-12 and 25-20.

“The crowd was awesome and we played some pretty good volleyball,” Toon said.

“Game number two was a throwback to earlier in the season when we were playing incredible volleyball,” he said. I hope we can build on that.”

Desiree Nielson led the way with 17 kills, two aces, six digs and five blocks in the win.

“(Nielson) contributed in a lot of areas tonight,” Toon said.

Taylor Lancaster also earned praise from her coach with 11 kills, six digs and three blocks.

“This may have been (Lancaster’s) best match this season,” Toon said. “She was ripping the ball around the Big Bend block.”

Reese Amy contributed 11 kills and two blocks as well.

Courtner Cosdon ran the offense to the tune of 42 assists; Jess Smith had 20 digs; and Delaney Fisher added another 12 digs.

Walla Walla Community College plays at the Mount Hood Halloween Classic Friday and Saturday.

The Warriors return home to host Walla Walla University at 6 p.m. Monday.

“This weekend at Mount Hood will be really fun,” Toon said. “The teams play in creative uniforms in honor of Halloween and I plan to be liberal in my subbing, so a lot of players will see action.

“This event will also allow us to play in the same facility that will host the NWAACC tournament in a month.”
