Dayton picks up 1st win of year over Mabton, 39-0

MABTON — Dayton’s football team ended its regular season with its first win here Friday night, a 39-0 drubbing of Mabton in a Southeast 2B contest.

Lowden Smith set the tone for the night by returning the opening kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown.

Wyatt Frame, who completed 13-of-18 passes for 160 yards and two touchdowns, intercepted a pass and sprinted 37 yards for the Bulldogs’ second touchdown of the game with 7:28 left in period one.

Dayton scored two more times in the second quarter. Smith scored on a 1-yard at the 6:54 mark, and Frame launched a 30-yard strike to Isaiah Lambert with 22 seconds left in the period to give the Bulldogs a 27-0 lead going into halftime.

Frame hit Dakota Hayes with a 20-yard touchdown pass with 5:50 left in the third quarter, and Smith scored from six yards out with 1:27 remaining in the final quarter to end the game’s scoring.

“It was their senior night and I knew if we didn’t do anything early, they might get the momentum,” Dayton coach Dean Bickelhaupt said. “But we set the tempo. We ran back that kickoff and that got us going.

“We had a bye last week and we got a lot more healthy,” Bickelhaupt said. “It made a difference.

“The kids needed that (win),” Bickelhaupt said. “They needed a boost.”

Dayton travels to Liberty Spangle for a District 7 cross-over game on Friday.
