WWCC finishes 4-2 at Mt. Hood volleyball tourney

GRESHAM, Ore. — Walla Walla Community College’s volleyball team posted a 4-2 record during the Mt. Hood tournament that wrapped up here Saturday.

WWCC won two matches and lost an equal number on Saturday. It lost to Olympic, 25-22, 25-22, 25-23, beat Shoreline, 27-25, 25-16, defeated Whatcom, 25-13, 25-15, and lost to Columbia Basin, 26-28, 25-23, 16-14.

The Warriors posted two wins on Friday. They knocked off Shoreline, 25-15, 25-13, 25-7, and Chemeketa, 26-24, 26-28, 25-15, 26-24.

Walla Walla’s Reese Amy had 83 kills and 13 blocks for the tournament. JaLisa Jose had 83 kills, 13 blocks, and five aces, Courtney Cosdon set 159 assists and upped 38 digs, Jess Smith had 73 digs and eight aces, Taylor Lancaster had 33 kills, and Renee Baumann contributed 30 kills and 60 digs.

“Reese took the team lead with official kill monster status,” WWCC coach Tim Toon said. “JaLisa showed that with a little more training, she could be an amazing middle. Courtney is making up ground on becoming one of the best setters in the NWAACC. Jess battled injury to play very competitive volleyball.

“The format of this tourney followed that of the NWAACC Championships (in three weeks),” Toon said. “We played hard and very good most of the time. Unfortunately, our big guns did not play great at the end of tight games. This is a great concern because we are good enough to win an NWAACC title or can struggle enough to not finish in the top 10. I guess time will answer that question.”

The Warriors host Walla Walla University Monday at 6 p.m.
