Mexico says it has arrested leader of Gulf Cartel crime gang

MEXICO CITY — Naval officials today put on display a man they said is one of Mexico’s most wanted kingpins and affirmed that his arrest had decapitated the Gulf Cartel, a once-formidable crime group battered in recent years by battles with a rival gang.

The navy said a 30-member team had captured Jorge Eduardo Costilla Sanchez, known as “El Coss,” on Wednesday in a residence in Ciudad Victoria, the capital of Tamaulipas state in northern Mexico.

U.S. prosecutors in southern Texas indicted Costilla in 2002, charging him with “a variety of dangerous drug offenses, threatening to assault and murder federal agents, money laundering, and aiding and abetting,” according to an FBI website devoted to him.
