POMEROY — In a game in which Pomeroy struck first and the lead changed hands six times after that, Clearwater Valley got the last score and a 28-26 victory over the Pirates in a non-league 8-man football game here Friday night.
“It was one of those games where whoever had the ball last was going to win,” Pomeroy coach Sanford Bates said.
That wasn’t quite accurate, however, because the visitors scored the game’s final touchdown with 40 seconds remaining on the clock.
Pomeroy got the ball back at about its own 40-yard line and freshman quarterback Haven Heytvelt completed a pair of passes for 29 yards to move the Pirates offense into Clearwater Valley territory.
But after an incompletion, Heytvelt was sacked on the final play of the game as Pomeroy suffered its second loss in three non-league outings.
Heytvelt took over at quarterback late in the first half when sophomore Kade Snyder suffered what proved to be a concussion. Snyder was playing in place of senior Ryan Smith, who suffered a high ankle sprain in the Pirates’ season opener and hasn’t played since.
“He is supposed to be back at practice Monday,” Bates said of Smith. “We hope he can play next weekend.”
That’s when Pomeroy opens Southeast 1B League play at St. John-Endicott.
One player who won’t be back is senior Austin Reisdorph, who suffered a season-ending knee injury in Pomeroy’s first game. His replacement, junior Wyatt Hyar, rushed for 118 yards on 13 carries, and his eight-yard touchdown run with about six minutes to play put Pomeroy ahead for the final time at 26-22.
Brendon Lueck also had a solid game, rushing 25 times for 96 yards and three touchdowns.
His 11-yard run in the first period put the Pirates on top 8-0. He scored on a three-yard run in the second period for a 14-8 Pirates lead. And his one-yard score in the third period made it 20-16 Pomeroy.
Clearwater Valley QB Hahots Shebal threw touchdown passes of 60 yards to Jacob Farmer in the first half and 6 yards to Laine Pratt in the fourth quarter for what proved to be the game-winning score.
Austin Reed scored the visitors’ first TD on a 35-yard run in the second period to forge an 8-8 tie and Farmer scored on a 7-yard run early in the fourth quarter for a 22-20 Clearwater Valley lead.
