WWCC finishes 3rd at volleyball tournament

LYNNWOOD, Wash. — The Walla Walla Community College Warriors battled to a third-place finish here Friday and Saturday at the Edmonds volleyball crossover.

Walla Walla defeated Centralia, Edmonds, Chemeketa and Whatcom before falling to Yakima in the semifinals.

The Warriors lost the first two games to Yakima by scores of 26-24 and 25-15. Walla Walla battled back to win two games, 26-24 and 25-22, before losing the rubber match, 19-17.

“Although the loss to Yakima was a bummer, we played pretty well this weekend,” WWCC coach Tim Toon said. “Our first four wins were against sub-par teams. When we had to crank it up against Yakima, we came up a few points short.”

The Warriors won their first four matches without losing a game.

The scores against Centralia were 27-25 and 25-13. Edmonds lost to Walla Walla, 25-7 and 25-12. Chemeketa was beaten by the Warriors, 25-22 and 25-21.

The win against Whatcom came in a best-of-five match. WWCC prevailed, 25-23, 25-19 and 25-14.

Tournament leaders for the Warriors statistically included Desiree Nielson with 60 kills and 13 blocks, Reese Amy with 39 kills, Taylor Lancaster with 31 kills, Jess Smith with eight aces and 47 digs, Renee Baumann with 20 kills and 44 digs, Courtney Cosdon with 122 assists and seven aces, Jalisa Jose with 20 kills and Delaney Fisher with 42 digs.

“We are in great shape,” Toon said. “We are 2-0 in league, 14-4 on the season and one of the top four teams in the NWAACC. We are going to be okay.”

The Warriors next match is at home Wednesday against Columbia Basin at 6 p.m.
