Whitman's volleyball losing streak at five


TACOMA — Whitman College’s losing streak reached five here Saturday afternoon as Pacific Lutheran University handed the Missionaries a 25-12, 25-17, 25-14 setback in Northwest Conference volleyball play.

Whitman saw its overall record slide to 2-7, and the Whits are 0-2 in the conference after opening NWC action with back-to-back losses in Tacoma. Saturday’s loss was preceded by a 25-22, 25-19, 19-25, 25-19 loss to the University of Puget Sound Friday night in the Loggers’ gym.

The Missionaries will play their 10th straight road match Wednesday when they travel to Spokane to take on the Whitworth Pirates in a 6 p.m. conference count.

Then, at long last, Whitman will make its Sherwood Center debut under first-year coach Matt Helm this coming weekend when Willamette comes to town for a 7 p.m. league match.

It will be back on the road after that, however, as Whitman travels to Newberg, Ore., Sept. 28 to face George Fox and to Portland the following night for a match against Lewis & Clark. Whitman will play seven of its final 10 games at Sherwood Center beginning Oct. 5 against Linfield.

Junior outside hitter Jillian Davis led the Whits here Saturday with 10 kills. Junior setter Taylor Aschenbrenner dished out 19 assists. Freshman libero Hannah Linsenmayer led players from both teams with 14 digs. Whitman managed just one block in the three-set match.

Kelsey Pacolt and Haley Urdahl finished with nine kills each for PLU while Allison Wood, Amy Wooten and Bethany Huston contributed seven kills each. Samantha North put up 38 assists and Amber Aguiar and Blair Bjorkman finished the match with 12 digs each.

Pacific Lutheran, which is 20th in the NCAA Division III national rankings, improved to 2-0 in conference and 8-2 overall.
