Crowley wins 200 IM at Wa-Hi meet

WALLA WALLA — Wenatchee swam past Wa-Hi 160-126 here Saturday at Whitman College’s Paul Harvey Pool in the Blue Devil home opener of the girls Mid-Columbia Conference swimming season.

“Wenatchee’s depth in the sprint freestyle is what got us in terms of points,” Blue Devil swimming coach Katharine Curles said in an e-mail. “But the Walla Walla girls had some amazing swims.”

Abby Crowley won the 200-yard individual medley in a state qualifying time of 2:14.79. Crowley added her second blue ribbon in the 100 backstroke as Crowley posted a state qualifying 1:00.87 to edge Wenatchee’s Hannah Bruggman.

Emma Timm-Ballard notched a win the 200 freestyle with a state qualifying 1:58.37. Coupled with her state qualifying Tuesday swim in the 100 backstroke, Timm-Ballard has now qualified for the two events that she finaled in at last year’s state meet.

“(For both of them) to get these times made and done so early in the season is really great,” Curles said. “Now we can focus on getting

more girls and relays to state to join them.”

Timm-Ballard also swam a 5:21.49 to take first in the 500 free by 29 seconds. Cheyenne Schoen touched first for the Blue Devils in the 100 Breast with a winning time of 1:13.96.

Crowley, Natalie Fink, Schoen, and Timm-Ballard swam a 3:48.17 to win the 400 free relay.

“They missed making state by a few hundredths of a second,” Curles said of the 400 free relay team. “Achieving that

time is our next goal, and judging by today’s swim, it is definitely achievable and soon.”

Schoen added a second in the 200 Free in 2:03.62 behind Timm-Ballard to give the Blue Devils a one-two finish. Fink swam to a second in the 50 Free (26.93) and the 100 Fly in a lifetime best 1:04.72. The Blue Devil team of Crowley, Kate Hogan, Schoen, and Timm-Ballard swam a 1:45.87 in the 200 Free Relay and earned second place points for the Blue Devils.

Wa-Hi’s Elli Rassbach came home third in the 200 IM with a 2:28.96 swim. Jordan Barnett, with a 6:20.88, earned a bronze in the 500 Free.

Wa-Hi travels to the Tri-Cities for Thursday’s Tri-Cities Champs meet and Saturday for the Blue Sun Invite.
