RICHLAND — The Wa-Hi girls swim team traveled to the Tri-Cities Championship meet Thursday afternooon, and the Blue Devils took third place with 152.5 point, behind Richland and Hanford.
“Third place is exactly where I thought and hoped we would place,” Wa-Hi coach Katharine Curles said. “The girls were mechanically sound on all their swims, but their bodies were tired. We’ve spent a lot of time this week working on strength building and stroke modifications, so personal records were hard to achieve.
“We were incredibly proud of our 500 times,” she said. “All three girls that entered — Elli Rassbach (5:51.49), Maya Rapp (6:14.55) and Michaela Hope (6:15.50) — dropped significant time. These girls showed the power of being mentally strong and they put it all out there.”
Cheyenne Schoen did very well in the 100 breaststroke.
“It was phenomenal third-place swim for her,” Curles said. “And Cheyenne continues to drop time every meet that she swims. Her time of 1:12.82 is right along the road to state. I’m thrilled for her.”
Schoen contributed a second-place finish (2:04.59) in the 200 freestyle as well.
The 400 freestyle relay was a third-place swim for the Blue Devils team.
The relay of Abby Crowley, Natalie Fink, Schoen and Emma Timm-Ballard came in at 3:49.07.
“The time for the 400 freestyle relay is really flirting with the state cut,” Curles said.
Crowley took second (2:17.23) in the 200 individual medley.
Timm-Ballard finished fifth (1:02.93) in the 100 butterfly and fourth (1:17.03) in the 100 breaststroke.
The next meet for Wa-Hi is Saturday at the Blue Sun Invite in Kennewick.
