Blue Devil harriers compete in Portland

PORTLAND — The Wa-Hi girls and boys cross country team had an impressive showing at the Nike Pre-National meet at the Portland Meadows here Saturday.

The Danner Division, with the fastest runners, was where the girls team competed.

Three Wa-Hi harriers had great times in a race of 165 runners over 3.1 miles.

Courtney Cox finished 31st (19:14), Hannah Hampson was just 31 seconds behind her, but finished 53rd (19:45). The third fastest Blue Devil was Catherine Feistner, who placed 74th (20:09.47).

“Those three girls were the people that I was most proud of,” Wa-Hi coach Michael Locati said. “The other girls ran well enough.”

The boys ran in the second-fastest grouping, Division One, with Sean Newcomb garnering a second-place in 15:49). Ben Wolpert grabbed 13th (16:20) and did so without do any running in practice. He has been swimming to train and to keep the impact on his sore shins low.

“Sean ran a very good race,” Locati said. “He was leading until the last half mile. He was ahead of the entire pack and then started to tire.”

The team is scheduled to run Saturday at the Richland Invite.
