MILTON-FREEWATER — La Grande High School handed McLoughlin 6-5 and 10-0 losses in a baseball doubleheader Saturday as the Pioneers opened Greater Oregon League play.
Mac-Hi almost came away with a victory in game one, however.
After rallying for two runs in the bottom of the seventh, the Pioneers had a runner on third with two outs gone and Jordan Leinbach at plate.
But La Grande reliever Mitch Workinger was able to strike Leinbach out, and the Tigers escaped with the one-run win.
“The first game I really thought that we’d come through and force extras,” Mac-Hi coach Mike Garcia said. “Leinbach usually gets the bat on the ball but it didn’t turn out that way. We just didn’t come to play in the second game.”
Starter Caleb White struck out 16 in game one and hit a home run in the nightcap.
Josh Gambill started game two for La Grande and also left the yard with a two-run bomb in the six-inning.
Pioneer pitchers walked 16 in the twin bill and the defense gave up seven errors.
Mac-Hi (7-3, 0-2 GOL) travels to Baker Saturday for two games starting at noon.
