Irish prevail in battle of unbeaten baseball teams with La Salle


WALLA WALLA — In a matchup of unbeaten prep baseball teams, DeSales prevailed Tuesday afternoon at Ray Lane Field as the Irish clipped visiting La Salle of Yakima 6-0.

The Lightning came into the game with an unblemished 6-0 record while the Irish improved to 6-0 with Tuesday’s win.

Both teams played up to their records as well as both teams benefited from steady pitching and srong defense. However, the Irish outhit La Salle 7-5 and made the most of their opportunities.

“It was a good high school baseball game,” DeSales coach Kim Cox said. “La Salle is pretty good. They made all the plays in the field, and their pitcher did a good job. It was a 2-0 game through five innings.”

La Salle’s Kevin Smith went the distance on the mound. He struck out one, walked one and hit two batters.

He couldn’t match DeSales’ Cam Richman, however, as the sophomore worked six shutout innings, allowed four hits, struck out 10 and walked one.

“Cam was pretty dominant,” Cox said of his ace right-hander.

Logan Hoeft pitched a scoreless seventh inning for DeSales.

DeSales plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning.

Darryl Galloway reached on an error, was bunted to second by Hoeft and Richman was hit by a pitch. Adam Eskil followed with a two-run double into the right-center field gap.

Joe Duehn was hit by a pitch to open DeSales’ two-run fifth. Duehn stole second and scored on a Travis Haen double to left. Haen scored on a Galloway single.

Eskil started the Irish’s two-run sixth inning with a single. He stole second and with one out and Tyler Pommerening delivered a run-scoring single. Pommerening took second on a subsequent throw to the plate, advanced to third on an infield out and scored on Haen’s second hit of the day.

The Irish return to Southeast 2B District play Saturday when they travel to Dayton for an 11 a.m. doubleheader. DeSales is 2-0 in league play.
