POMEROY — Pomeroy High School earned at least a split with visiting Dayton Tuesday after forcing extra innings in game one and coming away with a 9-8 victory.
But six Pirate errors for nine Bulldog runs in the first inning of the nightcap smashed any hopes Pomeroy had for picking up a sweep in the non-league softball doubleheader as Pomeroy fell 20-3.
“We switched it up a little bit (in the nightcap) and that put us into a bit of a slump,” Pomeroy coach Jessica Nelson said. “We had error after error and then we just had a kind of a dark cloud over us the rest of the game.
“The first two innings were the bad innings,” Nelson said. “We really pulled out of it after that, but it just wasn’t good enough. But the first game (was) very competitive, the girls just did awesome.”
Pomeroy picked up the win in the opener afer scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 8 and force extra innings.
Kacey Halbert knocked in the winning run for the win in the eighth inning.
Pomeroy (2-4) opens league play with a doubleheader at Touchet Saturday at 11 a.m.
