Flying Trout winemaker to step down May 1


The winemaker behind Flying Trout Wines is stepping away from the cellar to focus on the homefront.

Ashley Trout, who founded the winery in 2004, will take an undefined leave of absence as winemaker for the brand as she anticipates the birth of her second child, according to an announcement.

The change will take place May 1. Winemaking duties will be assumed by Doug Roskelley, co-owner of and winemaker for TERO Estates, which acquired Flying Trout in 2010. Trout and Roskelley have since been making wines side by side.

“My goal is to maintain the integrity of Flying Trout Wines while honoring Ashley’s winemaking philosophies,” Roskelley said in prepared statement.

Trout’s following for her malbec and malbec blends, as well as her torrontes, made in Mendoza, Argentina, is described as “cult-like.”

With two little ones younger than 3 expected in her home soon, and a busy travel and cellar schedule for her winemaker husband, Brian Rudin, “I knew it was time to part ways from the brand,” she said.

Flying Trout will continue to be poured at the Milton-Freewater winery by appointment and during special events and at the TERO Estates and Flying Trout tasting room, open daily at the Marcus Whitman Hotel & Conference Center.

To celebrate Trout’s work, a five-course Argentinian-inspired menu by chef Antonio Campolio will be paired with Flying Trout wines in an April 25 dinner at the Marcus Whitman.
