PASCO — Jessica Huntsman carded an 83 Monday to lead the Walla Walla High School girls golf team to a sixth-place finish in rain, sleet and hail at a Mid-Columbia Conference POD match at the par-72 Sun Willows Golf Course.
“It was terrible,” Wa-Hi coach Mike Patterson said of the conditions. “It rained so hard it went right through their rain gear.”
Play was suspended for an hour during the event due to the inclement weather.
“It became much more of a mental game at that point,” Patterson said. “It was great experience and I was very proud of the way they (Wa-Hi golfers) pulled through it.”
Hanford won the team scoring with a combined score of 323, followed by Richland at 368, Pasco 385, Chiawana 399, Southridge 399 and Walla Walla 412. Kennewick attended but did not field a complete team.
Hanford’s Lacy Skuarek and Pasco’s Neyden Martinez turned in 79s for co-medalist honors.
Huntsman’s 83 was good for fifth overall. Wa-Hi’s Kendall Dunovant tied for 15th with a 93. Shanna Postlewait carded a 112 and freshman Kailee Hudson a 124 to round out the Blue Devil scorers.
Wa-Hi has another POD match April 24 at the Canyon Lakes Golf Course in Kennewick. The Blue Devils have three more POD matches before districts, which Wa-Hi will be hosting at Veterans Memorial Golf Course May 14.
