DAYTON — If DeSales High School sophomore pitcher Connor Richard was nervous going into his first varsity start Tuesday, it didn’t show up in the stats.
Richard threw a five-inning no-hitter to guide the Irish to a 16-0 victory in the nightcap of a Southeast 2B doubleheader against Dayton.
Logan Hoeft and Isaiah Standard combined to hold the Bulldogs to three runs on three hits and an error in the opener for a 13-3 victory.
“We get throwing the same pitchers sometimes — just because they have experience — but we have some guys,” DeSales coach Kim Cox said of his pitchers. “Staff-wise we have four or five guys that we could put out there in a big game and do a good job, and Connor is one of them. Connor can push our guys for a No. 2 starter, he’s developing rapidly.”
Dayton pitcher Lowden Smith pitched the first five innings of the first game before leaving the game with the Bulldogs down, 6-3.
“The first game I pitched my ace (Smith),” Dayton coach Sal Benavides said, “and the plan was, if we could stay within a couple of runs he would pitch the complete game. If not, I could save him and try to pick up a win Friday against Tri-Cities Prep.”
Dayton’s pitching staff struggled in the second game, as the Bulldogs hit nine batters and issued three walks.
“The second game was just not pretty, as a coach you hate to see it,” Benavides said. “But DeSales is a good team, I believe they’re the best in league. We’ve just got to work on putting the ball in play and stepping up our defense.”
DeSales (9-0 overall, 4-0 in league) hosts La Grande for a single game today at 4 p.m. and hosts Asotin Saturday for a doubleheader at 11 a.m.
The Bulldogs (5-7, 2-4) visit Tri-Cities Prep Friday for a doubleheader at 3 p.m.
