Pianist-composer to teach jazz masterclass

WALLA WALLA — Jazz pianist and composer Phil Markowitz will teach a free jazz masterclass from 4-5:30 p.m. April 30 at the Whitman College Rehearsal Hall, room 127, in the Music Building, 345 Boyer Ave.

Markowitz is a 30-year veteran of the international jazz scene having played with Chet Baker, Mel Lewis, Phil Woods, Dave Liebman, Joe Lovano, Ravi Coltrane, Toots Theilemans and many more.

He performs original compositions, which range from hard-cutting chromaticism to lyrical post-romantic ballads. Markowitz presents a forward-looking vision for contemporary music.

He is currently on the Manhattan School of Music faculty.
