Tigers hand DeSales first loss

WALLA WALLA — Cam Richman, Adam Eskil and Isaiah Standard combined on a six-hitter Wednesday afternoon at Ray Lane Field during non-conference baseball action pitting DeSales against La Grande.

Unfortunately for the Irish, the pitching performances were not enough to prevent them from suffering their first loss of the 2013 season.

The Tigers, a member of the Class 4A Greater Oregon League, pushed across a run in the 10th inning and hung on for a 2-1 victory.

DeSales, which swept a Southeast 2B League doubleheader at Dayton on Tuesday, is now 8-1 overall.

After leaving one runner on base in the first inning and the sacks loaded in the second, the Irish gave up the game’s first run on a wild pitch in the top of the third inning.

DeSales stranded two more runners on base in the home third prior to tying the score in the bottom of the fourth when Kyler Pommerening bounced an RBI single through the Tigers’ infield.

The Irish left another runner aboard in the fifth before going down quietly in innings six, seven, and eight.

DeSales had a golden opportunity to win the game in the bottom of the ninth when it loaded the bases.

But Darryl Galloway grounded into a 4-6-3 double play that sent the contest into the 10th inning.

Richman threw the first five innings and Eskil tossed the next three before giving way to Standard.

“Our pitchers threw really well,” DeSales coach Kim Cox said. “We had lots of chances. Literally every guy on our team had a chance to win the game and didn’t do it. We didn’t hit a ball with guys on.

“The La Grande guys outplayed us,” Cox said. “They are a great bunch.”

The Irish resume league play Saturday when they host Asotin for an 11 a.m. twin bill.

“They’ve stepped up their schedule,” Cox said. “It will be a good battle with them. They are a good group.”
