DeSales’ Emily Baumgart finishes runner up at all-girl Wally Johnson Invite

YAKIMA — DeSales High School’s Emily Baumgart carded an 80 to place second at the all-girl Wally Johnson Invite Thursday, a 23-school, 80-golfer tournament held at the par-70 Suntides Golf Course in Yakima.

“It’s a fun tournament,” DeSales coach Lon Olson said. “It’s an all-girl deal, and they don’t get that very often, so I think they were pretty happy with the whole deal.”

Elizabeth Ruthven, the only other DeSales golfer to attend, finished the course in 133 strokes to place 60th.

Goldendale’s Bree Wandersheid, the defending Class 1A state champion, shot a round of 74 for the low score of the day.

Baumgart struggled on the front nine, making the turn at 8-over 44, but she rallied for a 2-over 36 on the back of the course.

Golfing in the same pairing, neither Baumgart nor Wandersheid made a birdie on the day.

“They both battled hard,” Olson said. “Pars didn’t come easy.”

Baumgart had nine pars on the day.

“Emily plugged away, that’s what a good golfer does,” Olson said. “She just struggled with direction — all of them were lining up and pushing drives to the right because the fairways curved off to the left and they weren’t taking that into account.”

Ruthven, a junior, was playing her second 18-hole round of her career.

“She’s right where she needs to be and she’s doing well,” Olson said.

DeSales’ boys and girls will reunite Tuesday for the DeSales Wine Valley Invite, a tournament for all of the District 9 schools, including Walla Walla Valley Academy, and Mac-Hi.
