Walla Walla Community College baseball runs win streak to six

YAKIMA — Walla Walla Community College ran its NWAACC East baseball winning streak to six games here Saturday with an 8-5 and 10-4 sweep of Yakima Valley.

In the process, the Warriors leap frogged the Yaks into second place in the East. Treasure Valley leads the pack at 13-3, with Walla Walla now at 11-5, and Yakima falls to 10-6.

The Warriors fought back from a 3-0 deficit in the first game to get it tied at 4-4 heading to the Yak sixth. Yakima scored to take a 5-4 lead, but WWCC answered by scoring four times over the last three innings to pull out the 8-5 win.

Jarod Gonzales and Jesse Houser went yard to lead the Warrior 12-hit attack. Tony Salas collected three hits and Conner Holbrook chipped in two and drove in two runs.

The Warriors took their first lead with a two-spot in the eighth and turned the game over to Nick Bettinson in the home eighth. The left hander closed it out with two scoreless innings and recorded five of the six outs with strikeouts.

The Warriors took an early 4-0 lead with two in the second and two in the third in game two. Yakima closed to within 4-3 after six, but the Warriors posted three in both the seventh and eighth to hold off the Yaks and complete the sweep with the 10-4 win.

Salas led the Warrior 13-hit attack with four hits and knocked in two runs. Shane Dixon and Ryan Neal chipped in two hits each.

The Warriors went righty, lefty, on the mound as righty Brandon Costello worked into the sixth and left with a 4-3 lead. Lefty Nick Brockman came on in relief to quell the Yak sixth and finished the game allowing only one run the rest of the way.

“It was nice to see us come back in game one after being down early against a quality opponent,” WWCC coach Dave Meliah said. “We just kept the momentum after that.

“Tony Salas (seven hits on the day) had a heck of a day swinging the bat,” Meliah added. “Our bullpen guys did a great job in both games minimizing their rallies.”

WWCC, 19-13 overall, hosts Wenatchee Valley in a 1 p.m. East Region double bill Wednesday.
