DAYTON — Senior Sam Harting and junior Lexus Ward were dominant in the circle here Monday and their offense exploded for 29 hits as Dayton swept Tri-Cities Prep 18-0 and 17-0 in a Southeast 2B District softball doubleheader.
Both games were stopped via the 10-run mercy rule after five innings.
Harting fired a no-hitter in the first game, struck out 14 of the 16 batters she faced and came within a first-inning walk of chalking up a perfect game. Ward was just as effective in the second game as she blanked the Jaguars, struck out nine and didn’t walk a batter.
Ward also came within a whisker of pitching a perfect game, setting down the first 14 Tri-Cities batters in order before Madison Taber dropped a single down the right field line with two out in the fifth inning. The game ended when Taber was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a double.
Harting was the hitting hero of the first game as she delivered a single, double and triple, chalked up five runs batted in and scored three times. She would later complete the cycle for the day with a three-run home run in the second game.
Malia Frame socked two doubles, drove home two runs and scored four times in the opener, and Caitlyn Robins added a single, double and scored twice. Ward had just one hit in the game, but it was a big one, a three-run home run in the third inning.
Frame had four singles, drove home three runs and scored twice to lead the Bulldogs’ attack in the second game. Harting singled twice as well as homering and finished the second game with four RBIs and two runs scored. Kellie Moore added a single and a double, scored twice and drove in a run. And MaKayla Bickelhaupt chipped in with a single, a double and one run scored.
“The girls struggled with their bats the last time out,” Dayton assistant coach Desirae Jones said. “So it was nice to have them come back with a successful day at the plate.
“Every single starter got at least one hit, and both of our pitchers stepped up as well. That’s a good thing to have going into more league play.”
A busy week continues today when Dayton takes on Waitsburg-Prescott in a 3 p.m. league doubleheader in Prescott. The Bulldogs then host the Wa-Hi junior varsity in a 4 p.m. twin bill on Wednesday.
“We are running out of days to play all of these games,” Jones said. “Things have gotten all crammed up.”
The Bulldogs improved to 4-2 in league games and 7-4 overall with Monday’s sweep.
