WALLA WALLA — DeSales High School looked like toast Tuesday after giving up eight unearned runs to Touchet in two innings, but the Irish rallied back for a 9-8 Southeast 1B-2B victory with two runs in the bottom of the seventh.
DeSales (12-4, 6-0 SE2B) opened the game with a pair of runs in the home first, but soon fell back as the Indians scored four runs in both the second and third innings.
Eighth-grade pitcher Kaylee Brown started the game and gave up six hits in three innings, but Irish assistant coach Jason Postlewait said she was let down by the defens, which committed five errors while she was in the circle.
“In both innings they scored she should have been out of the inning after the fourth batter,” Postlewait said. “We had some starters who struggled today and we put a lot of different people in because it’s our last non-league game.
“But the main thing was that we were able to rally back for the win,” Postlewait said. “And Touchet is a good team too — (Touchet coach Gary) Dorman always has his teams ready to go.”
After falling behind 8-2 after three innings, junior ace Ashlyn Lyons came on and shut the Indians down, allowing just two hits and no runs over the remaining four innings.
DeSales pulled to within one afer scoring five runs in the fourth, but neither team scored again until the seventh.
Down a run, the Irish scored two runs on an error, a passed ball, and three base hits to win the game. Britt Postlewait, Allesyn Lyons and Molli Lesko had hits in the rally.
The Irish host Tekoa-Oakesdale-Rosalia Saturday and visit Waitsburg-Prescott Tuesday for their last doubleheaders of the regular season.
“We’re looking forward to our last two games,” Postlewait said, “but we really need to clean it up on defense. We are starting to come around on offense, however.”
