DAYTON — Errors hurt Dayton in a Southeast 2B League twin bill with Waitsburg-Prescott here Tuesday, as W-P won twice, 10-4 and 28-2.
In the first game, Bulldog errors allowed runs in the first and second innings, and two more opened up a four-run W-P fifth inning which overcame a 4-2 Dayton lead.
W-P had two errors itself to lead to Bulldog runs in the opener.
“It was, who was going to give it up worse in the first game,” Dayton coach Sal Benavides said. “We also gave up a couple runs on passed balls that killed us.”
Lowden Smith picked up 11 strikeouts for Dayton in the game.
In the nightcap, Logan Hays got the start on the mound for the hometown, but didn’t get offense or defense to help his cause.
“We just didn’t have anything in the second game,” Benavides said. “We started making errors right off the bat, and the score shows that.
“We had two guys hurt who couldn’t pitch, and that didn’t help matters.”
W-P scored 10 first-inning runs to secure the game quickly.
Dalton Estes was 6-for-6 with a home run, two triples and a double in the second game, and Nick Pearson went 2-for-3 with a homer and double as well.
Dayton, 5-11 overall and 2-8 in SE2B play, finish the regular season Tuesday at Tekoa-Oakesdale-Rosalia. Victories there should put the Bulldogs into the fifth spot in league to battle it out for regional berths.
W-P improves to 11-3 overall and 7-1 in SE2B play, and hosts Touchet Thursday in Prescott at 4 p.m.
