Weston-McEwen sweeps Rockets

ATHENA — Weston-McEwen High School’s softball team swept a doubleheader against Pilot Rock here Saturday, 4-3 and 8-2, in Special District 5 action.

The TigerScots clung to a 4-3 lead in game one of the Pilot Rock seventh inning.

The first two batters reached base and then the next hitter popped out to the pitcher, Molly von Borstel. She caught the popout and picked off a baserunner for a double play to end the inning.

“It was anybody’s game until von Borstel turned the double play in the seventh of game one,” Griggs said. “We had a mound conference right before the play, talking about how it would be good to try to induce a popout.”

Game two was an easier win for W-M.

The TigerScots pounded out eight hits and eight runs while allowing just three hits.

W-M (5-3 league, 13-5 overall) plays again Tuesday at home against Irrigon at 4:30 p.m.
