Awareness campaign accompanies city road work

The city is spending $16,000 to keep the public up to date on construction progress and traffic delays during work this summer and fall.


WALLA WALLA — City officials recently kicked off a $16,000 public awareness campaign featuring a new website, numerous billboards around town and other methods to let people know about the various city, county, state and federally funded construction projects taking place this summer and fall.

City road work this year is estimated around $8.5 million, but City Manager Nabiel Shawa said the actual figure is closer to $11 million including design work and other associated costs.

“Given the numerous construction projects under way this summer, the city needed to change-up its communications approach. The Web-based format allows for continual posting of project updates and information, accessible 24 hours a day,” Shawa said.

The $16,000 campaign includes just over $6,000 in Union-Bulletin advertising. The remaining $10,000 will pay for the design of 10 Web pages, creating billboards for construction zones and other sites, a utility bill insert and other related costs, including roughly $6,000 in printing costs.

Shawa said the majority of the costs will be paid for through a combination of infrastructure improvement funds, the voter-approved road construction sales tax and water and sewer enterprise funds. A small portion of the signage costs will be paid for with federal and state money.

“The primary objective is to improve communications with citizens and businesses. We recognize that communications are an area where the city needs to continue to improve,” Shawa said.

Later this year, officials plan to introduce a newly designed city website for all of its 138 Web pages.

The $18,000 contract was awarded last year to Walla Walla Web Weavers.

I'm pleased to know what's going on. The site has clear information about the projects and I see a good use of my dollars. Construction sites always have signs explaining the costs. Our city took the dollars they could have spent on ugly signs and made nice signs that got noticed, backed up by a website. Nicely done!

I thought I voted for *my tax money* to go towards the actual fixing the roads... Hmmm, Sounds like *my tax money* got used for other things... I don't remember reading the small print stating *my tax money* would be used for promotional billboards.... Well, it sounds like it was all legal though..... So switching *my tax money* to do other things is ok.....
Sounds familiar, like another local elected board?
