Diagonal parking needed on Alder Street

Walla Walla’s central business district suffers from too little convenient parking when needed the most, during business hours. But for less than the cost of the current pothole advertising campaign budget, more parking could be added and it would have tremendous benefits for all.

How?

Change Alder Street to diagonal parking and create extra parking places by removing bus stops in the blocks from Spokane Street to Sixth Avenue. Also the west side of First Avenue could be made diagonal parking on one side for smaller cars, motorcycles and scooters.

Sure you’d have to lower the speed limit, but the area could pick up 50 parking places, all within one block of Main Street and the extra parking would make the properties on Alder more desirable for business locations and customers’ convenience.

Bus patrons could be dropped off at crosswalks or just walk a block or two farther, which would allow for better use of downtown frontages for business of all types.

Since the infrastructure is already in place, paint and a few signs would create a great benefit on the cheap for a better community.

Mr. Henderson has a simple, brilliant idea. Inexpensive, huge pay off for those looking to park close to downtown. More spaces, not a lot of expenditure, but finally a great way to serve the public on a little tax payer money. Let's get going us this!
