The state Department of Labor & Industries will close down its technology kiosk at the Port of Walla Walla administrative office at the end of this year.
The minimal use doesn’t justify the expense of the operation, the agency announced Thursday. More L&I customers are seeking permits, permit inspection requests, injury claim programs and more online or through other service locations, the agency said.
The kiosk opened in 2006 as a downsized alternative to a local office. L&I closed its Walla Walla office on Portland Street at the end of 2005 because of low customer volume then, too.
The kiosk was a way to stay connected in the community in increasingly technological times. The conversion of the office into a kiosk, and another similar setup in Okanogan, were expected to save the state more than $150,000 a year at the time. That money was to be put back into fraud prevention, work-related accident prevention, improvements in communication, customer service, and operation of the kiosks.
Services now available at the kiosk can still be accessed through L&I offices in Kennewick, Yakima, Moses Lake and East Wenatchee, or online at Lni.wa.gov .
