A proposed expansion of the East End Rod & Gun Club has drawn objections from one of its neighbors.

The Milton-Freewater gun club filed a land use application with Umatilla County seeking to continue use of its current 85 acre range and expand onto an additional 35 acres on the same property.

Neighboring farmers Dennis and Nathan Rea filed a request for a public hearing, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

An attorney for the Reas submitted a letter to the planning commissioners on Dec. 12 stating that preliminary findings and conclusions for the gun club’s application fail to address the club’s impact on adjacent farms with irrigated agricultural practices.

The letter said that the proposed expansion “will increase conflicts with the farming in the area ... and will increase the cost of existing farm practices.”

According to the Planning Department’s findings, released on Oct. 15, the expanded area for the club would include four trap fields, two skeet overlay fields, a lean-to, four trap houses and four skeet houses.

Thursday’s hearing is open to the public and will be held in the Justice Center Media Room at 4700 NW Pioneer Place in Pendleton.
