City goes to grate lengths to fix tree well problems

The grates surrounding downtown Walla Walla trees may be looking a bit different these days.

City crews have been working on solutions to fix the grates, which had become tripping hazards as the roots of the trees lifted them out of the tree wells.

According to the latest update from Walla Walla Parks and Recreation Director Jim Dumont, via the Downtown Walla Walla Foundation’s weekly newsletter, 294 tree wells have been examined and addressed. Of those, 150 grates were cut, leveled and bolted to ensure they are flat in the tree well. Many of the grates had been removed last summer because they were becoming problematic for pedestrians.
