WALLA WALLA — A sorority sweet on reading spent part of Saturday helping little hands make valentines for sweethearts.

From 1-3 p.m., several tables in the Walla Walla Public Library were turned into valentine-making stations for dozens of children, who were assisted by a half dozen Kappa Kappa Gamma volunteers.

One of the sorority’s key missions is improving literacy.

Though little reading was done, philanthropy chair Rina Wulfing said the goal was to build a bond with the library.

“When they are here, you know that they are learning that the library is a resource. So learning that pretty young is important,” Wulfing said.

The largest annual reading event for the sorority is Dr. Seuss Day, where children gets free books and take part in reading and craft projects.

Dr. Seuss Day will be March 3 at the Reid Campus Center at Whitman College from 2-3:30 p.m.
